The origin of the series dates back to 1982, when TOMY COMPANY, LTD., currently known, launched a toy for boys intended for overseas markets. In 1983, in Japan, it adopted the name of the overseas title “TECHNO ZOIDS”, which had been released ahead of time, and started its domestic expansion as “ZOIDS”.
It attracted significant attention and made a breakthrough when the anime version, aired in 1999, became a major hit. The storyline was quite serious, and it was an unusually cool anime that made generous use of 3DCG, which was pretty rare at that time, attracting attention not only from children but also from people who were not ZOIDS fans before.
