Among the mecha appearing in “Ghost in the Shell”, Tachikoma might be an existence that is hard to forget once seen. While having a rounded and charming appearance, its true identity is a thinking tank for combat equipped with high mobility. What lets you enjoy such a unique gap is Kotobukiya's “Ghost in the Shell Series” 1/35 scale plastic kit “Tachikoma With Motoko Kusanagi & Batou”. The scale is unified with the multi-legged tank “Kenbishi Heavy Industries HAW206” Prototype ver. from the same series, and being able to expand the worldview by lining them up is also a point. While cherishing the comical silhouette, because persuasive details as a mecha are also solidly incorporated, it is a figure that does not end with “cute”, making you want to gaze down to the details.
Even just reproducing the appearance seems fully enjoyable, but this Tachikoma is crafted even up to the inside. Fine sculpting is applied to the cockpit, and the rear cockpit hatch and upper hatch can be opened and closed as they are without exchanging parts. You can enjoy switching between a figure typical of a combat mecha with hatches closed, and a mechanical state showing the inside. And in the cockpit, it is possible to board the included 1/35 scale unpainted figure “Motoko Kusanagi (Sitting)”. Not only displaying Tachikoma standalone, but being able to imagine a scene in the show where “the Major is riding inside” is pleasing. Precisely because it is a small kit, the large amount of information packed into a limited size stands out.
That the included figures are substantial cannot be missed either. In addition to Motoko Kusanagi, “Batou (Standing)”, and even “Miki (Sitting)”, the girl met by Tachikoma who slipped out of Public Security Section 9, are prepared. Especially because Miki can be placed on top of Tachikoma's head to display, rather than a mere person figure bonus, display recalling impressive episodes is possible. The choice that makes you think “Can it reproduce that far?” is irresistible for fans who know the work. Not focusing only on battle scenes, being able to express even aspects possessed by Tachikoma that somehow make you feel human warmth in a 3D object would be the fun unique to this set.
If you like mecha, you would want to check armament gimmicks as well. The 50mm grenade launcher is structured so that pulling out the latch, removing the barrel cover, and actually loading the included shell parts is possible. Furthermore, because changing equipment to a 12.7mm Gatling gun is also possible, you can display with different specifications like “Today grenade launcher, next Gatling gun”. Ball joints are adopted for the characteristic head sensors, and because the orientation can be changed freely, even a slight difference in angle can direct a Tachikoma-like expression. Even though there is no face itself, somehow feeling a gaze just by the orientation of the sensors. It is an articulated part where you can enjoy even such character traits.
And what makes you want to smirk unintentionally, thinking “Do you make that an option part?”, is natural oil. By exchanging part of the included parts, even the scene injecting natural oil can be reproduced. Furthermore, shells for the 50mm grenade launcher and more are also included, content where you can enjoy both combat equipment and props typical of the work. Utilizing the dedicated stand allows displaying in a stable state, and it also corresponds to “Mechanical Base Flying 3” through replacement parts. Devising poses and arrangements allows expanding to displays matched to your image, from figures quietly waiting on standby to scenes with movement.
The charm of this kit lies not only in simply reproducing the form of Tachikoma. Including hatches that open and close, a crafted cockpit, swappable armaments, articulated head sensors, natural oil, and characters like Motoko Kusanagi, Batou, and Miki, it is in being able to imagine various scenes from “Ghost in the Shell”. Precisely because of a compact scale like 1/35, creating the work's world even in a limited space after completion will be easy. Whether to gaze at it as a mecha, cherish it as a character, or reproduce a single scene in the show. It is a high-density Tachikoma that entertains you even during the time spent thinking “How shall I display it?” after assembling.
