The moment you hear the name “Yamato,” I think many people, even those not familiar with battleships, feel something special. Massive, overwhelming, legendary. Such words naturally come to mind. But what is interesting is that when it actually appears in front of you as a model, that impression changes even further. The “1/700 WN1EX-2 Imperial Japanese Navy Battleship Yamato (Operation Ten-Go / 1945) Special Edition” is not just a model that made a famous battleship smaller. Looking at its completed form, it feels less like a battleship and more like a single scene from history has been captured. Moreover, this model replicates her appearance during Operation Ten-Go in April 1945. Even though it is just sitting quietly, it possesses a mysterious presence as if a tense atmosphere is drifting around it.
The first thing that catches the eye in this special edition is likely the dedicated wooden deck sticker. When you hear “sticker,” you might think of it as a simple decoration, but in reality, it is something that changes the impression significantly. The world of military ship models is one where the level of completion jumps all at once as details accumulate, and among those details, the deck is a considerably crucial part. Precisely because it occupies a wide area of the entire hull, simply adding texture here alters the atmosphere. Looking at its appearance after you finish applying it, it is no longer “just a gray warship.” The warmth and realism of wood blend into the mass of iron, and the expression as a ship suddenly deepens. While it seems like a small change, the impression when completed is greater than imagined.
When displaying a model, I think the part that is surprisingly difficult is “how to place it.” Simply placing it on a flat surface is neat, but it easily tends to look somewhat like a museum exhibit. However, this product comes with a sea surface base. What's more, instead of a simple base, it is interesting that even the wake waves generated from the bow, sides, and propellers are replicated three-dimensionally. The moment it is completed and placed on it, you want to say “it has started sailing” rather than “it is displayed.” In its figure cutting through the waves, there is no frozen impression unique to static objects, and it carries an air as if a snippet from the middle of a scene where it slowly advances on the sea has been extracted. Even though it is on a desk, it mysteriously makes you almost imagine the scent of the ocean.
When turning your eyes to the fine details, the true dedication of this model gradually sinks in. The hull is molded in a dedicated color inspired by the warship color of the Kure Naval Arsenal, creating a sufficient atmosphere even without painting. And in order to replicate her appearance during Operation Ten-Go, the detailed expression extending to the state where many of the portholes were sealed is impressive. Since the unsealed parts are replicated with concave engraving and the sealed parts with convex engraving, a difference in the amount of information can be firmly felt when viewed up close. With details down to the fastening sections of the degaussing cables being expressed, there are places here and there that make you admire in spite of yourself, thinking, “They even looked into that?” Models that put effort into inconspicuous areas, not just the flashy parts, become more interesting the more you keep looking at them.
Speaking of Yamato, the presence of the 46 cm main guns is indispensable after all. Since elevation, depression, and rotation of the main guns are possible in this product, the impression changes greatly even with a slight difference in angle. Pointing them straight ahead makes you feel pressure, and simply changing the angle a bit makes her look like she is on alert. Furthermore, the muzzle sections are sculpted with open holes, creating a firm sense of three-dimensionality despite the small scale. And the bridge section is also quite fascinating. A natural finish is realized through a structure that minimizes seams as much as possible, and the appearance of Yamato from that era is intricately incorporated, such as the relocated No. 22 radar and the rotatable rangefinder. The funnel is also not to be missed. With the hollowed-out expression of the grating section and detailed structures added, the amount of information is extremely high whether viewed from above or from the side.
Reading up to this point, you might think, “Isn't this a difficult model?” However, that worry might surprisingly be unnecessary. Thanks to the pre-colored parts, it results in a finish just as imagined even without painting, and furthermore, since it uses a snap-fit method, glue is also unnecessary. It is a welcoming point that the structure makes it easy to try even for people with little modeling experience, yet provides a sufficient sense of accomplishment when completed. What was a collection of tiny parts before starting assembly appears before your eyes as a massive battleship before you know it. That process feels less like the task of simply combining components and more like a time of leading a single Yamato toward completion bit by bit. When gazing at it quietly after completion, I think it is a product that leaves a sensation less like “I built a model” and more like “I have welcomed a scene from history into my hands.”
