The Kamov Ka-52K Katran carrier-based attack helicopter
is now available as a 1/72 scale model!

First, learning about the background of this aircraft sparks immediate interest. The Ka-52K is a model based on the two-seat Ka-52—itself an evolution of the single-seat Ka-50 attack helicopter—modified further for carrier-based operations, making its first flight in 2015. While building on the performance of the base Ka-52, it features anti-rust and anti-corrosion treatments to adapt to maritime environments, and the rotors and wings have been changed to a folding type for shipboard storage. With crew protection systems for emergency water landings and emergency ditching functions included, the specifications elevate the ”land attack heli” into a ”maritime force.” Furthermore, with the installation of a new phased array radar, the detection range has increased to 200km—about double that of conventional models—and it possesses anti-ship missile operational capabilities, meaning its prowess goes far beyond the scope of a mere derivative.
This kit is composed of newly molded injection parts by Dream Model, carefully recreating the characteristic silhouette of the Ka-52K in 1/72 scale. Its unique form, featuring the distinctive coaxial rotors, stands out with a strong presence when displayed after completion. The rotors are designed so you can choose between the unfolded and folded states, and the impression changes significantly depending on whether you envision a flight scene or represent a standby posture on deck. The time spent agonizing over ”which way to finish it” is truly part of the real pleasure of model making.
Of particular note is the adoption of 3D-printed parts for detailed components such as the exhaust, cockpit, sensor tower, and Kh-35 air-to-ship missiles. Thanks to this, fine molds and complex shapes are reproduced sharply, creating a sense of density that exceeds the scale. The amount of information inside the cockpit and the three-dimensional expression around the sensors gain even more reality when combined with painting. The precision is so high that you might find yourself wanting to grab a magnifying glass, wondering, ”Did they really reproduce it in this much detail?”—pushing the overall perfection of this kit higher.
Furthermore, because photo-etched parts are included, antennas and fine details can be expressed with the thinness unique to metal. In addition, two types of decals—Russian Navy and Chinese Navy specifications—are provided, and the atmosphere completely transforms depending on which nationality you choose for the finish. The fun of military aircraft modeling lies in how the story changes just by switching the markings on the same aircraft, and this kit delivers that enjoyment perfectly.
This 1/72 Ka-52K ”Katran” is not just a helicopter model. The charm lies in the experience itself—understanding the evolution of an attack helicopter adapted to the special environment of maritime operations as you assemble it with your own hands. You might choose to evoke the tension of standing by on a ship with folded rotors, or recreate the intensity just before a sortie in the fully unfolded state. After completion, despite the compact scale, the highly detailed aircraft is sure to sharpen the look of your display shelf. This is one box that rotorcraft fans, as well as those interested in modern aircraft, should definitely pick up.
