[Tank] The first Japanese anti-tank missile
”Type 64 Anti-Tank Missile (64MAT)” modeled!
Boasting 140 parts, enjoy the true pleasure of recreating its beautiful silhouette!
When you hear ”compact truck,” you might imagine a somewhat simple support vehicle, but the moment you learn it is equipped with anti-tank missiles, that impression completely changes. The ”JGSDF Type 73 Light Truck (MAT Equipped)” recreated in 1/35 scale is a kit modeling the vehicle carrying the Type 64 Anti-Tank Missile—the so-called 64MAT—which was Japan's first purely domestically produced anti-tank missile. Rather than a mere vehicle model, it brings the practical tension held by the Cold War-era Japan Ground Self-Defense Force right onto your desk. The mobile Type 73 Light Truck supported what was an advanced system for its time, using a wire-guided method where the gunner continues to steer the missile after launch to aim for a target's weak points. The functional beauty emitted by this combination possesses a strong persuasiveness just by looking at it as a model.
The highlight of this kit is undoubtedly the level of reproduction of the 64MAT. From the dedicated mount to the control unit for guidance operations and the missile body itself, the ATM-1B, everything is carefully composed as individual parts. The assembly process itself leads to an understanding of the equipment's structure. It is truly interesting that the design doesn't stop at simply showing a missile on board; it naturally evokes a scene of ”how it was aimed and how it was operated,” allowing you to enjoy the fun of reflecting on the background of the equipment through the model. The sculpting, with attention paid to every detail, maximizes the amount of information unique to the classic 1/35 scale, possessing a density that makes you want to observe it closely after completion.
The included marking decals are also an important element that increases the value of this kit. Vehicle markings for real-life units such as the Fuji School Brigade Headquarters, the 12th Anti-Tank Unit at Shinmachi Camp, and the 1st Airborne Brigade at Narashino Camp are provided, so the story begins from the stage of choosing which unit specification to finish. Even for the same vehicle, if the affiliation changes, the background and mission assumptions differ, and the meaning imbued in the finished product also changes. The range of choices stimulates the imagination to the point of making one want to ask, ”Will you imagine the front lines of training as an instructor unit, or a scene emphasizing the mobility of an airborne unit?”
With 140 parts, the configuration offers a moderate sense of build satisfaction, while its size upon completion—approximately 110mm in total length, 80mm in width, and 56mm in height—asserts a firm presence even within a collection case. It strikes an exquisite balance where the number of parts isn't so high that it becomes overwhelming, yet it isn't too simple either, providing a pleasant production time for those who want to work deliberately or those who want to build a JGSDF vehicle for the first time in a while. Depending on the painting and weathering, you can recreate the atmosphere of a training ground, and by combining it with same-scale crew figures or a diorama base, it is possible to create an even more realistic scene.
The combination of the Type 73 Light Truck and the 64MAT symbolizes a milestone in Japan's defense history. Recreating that form in 1/35 scale is an experience that goes beyond mere model making, touching upon the technical challenges and operational philosophies of that time. Please try to complete with your own hands this form that quietly speaks of the anti-tank capability and tension hidden within the small vehicle body. When you finish assembling it, what stands there should not be a mere collection of plastic, but a cross-section of history.
