When people hear the term plastic model, many might think of mecha or fighter jets, but in this day and age, that framework has expanded far beyond that. And the one we are introducing this time is a stylish figure themed around a ”prince-like high school boy.” The [Touou Academy High School / Jersey] Dreaming Style Midnight Onyx is a prime example. Rui Saotome, a character so popular that she has her own fan club at school, has descended into the world of plastic models in a black and gray monotone jersey. This elegance and composure create an appearance that makes you want to call her a ”quiet charisma.”
Rui's charm lies in more than just her well-featured face. It comes with four types each of pre-painted and unpainted expression parts: a ”smiling face,” ”fan service face,” ”angry face,” and ”blushing face,” all of which can be used expressively according to the scene. The ”fan service face” is particularly noteworthy. The moment you see it, you'll understand why she has a fan club—it has incredible destructive power. Furthermore, the water-slide decals for the unpainted parts include different eye directions, so it's interesting to be able to create your own unique ”favorite face.” It's a specification that stimulates the creative urge.
The great thing about this series is that these aren't just figures meant for standing. There are three types of skirts (standard, fluttering, and sitting), and in addition to the standard body, it comes complete with upper body parts for forward-leaning and sitting poses. This allows for a wide range of recreations, from sitting in a chair reading to a full-fledged riding pose for a motorcycle. The neck has a structure that slides back and forth, allowing for free and detailed expressions. The feeling of breathing a ”living expression” into a character within this small range of motion is truly the best part of assembly-style hobbies.
When it comes to the riding style, another point to note is the ”full-face helmet.” It would be a huge mistake to think of it as just an accessory; the smoke-black visor can be opened and closed. Moreover, the interior of the helmet is meticulously sculpted down to Rui's bangs and the hair at the nape of her neck. Furthermore, it's possible to customize it by attaching face parts from other series (Sousai Shojo Teien, Megalomaria), giving it a presence not just as ”headgear” but as a ”stage prop.” One cannot help but feel the obsession of the production team in the way even the flow of her hair when the helmet is removed is expressed.
The uniqueness of this model also lies in its ability to balance ”everyday life” and ”action.” It doesn't end with just the standard school uniform; it also includes a dedicated riding body (lower half), and the thigh roll and double-jointed knees allow for realistic motorcycle mounting poses. When combined with the forward-leaning parts and the helmet, the level of completion is as if a single illustration has come to life. This luxurious specification, allowing you to enjoy two completely different styles—uniform and riding—at once, enriches and expands the world of the work.
