The F-14A Tomcat—Air Superiority Fighter Active Until the 2000s—Now Available in 1/72 Scale! Don’t Miss the Aircraft Known as “The Last F-14 Seen in Japan”!

Once renowned as a top air superiority fighter, the F-14A Tomcat underwent a remarkable transformation with the times. In the late 1990s, the introduction of LANTIRN pods enabled it to accurately target enemies even at night, shifting its role from a pure fighter to a precision strike aircraft. This change shocked many aircraft enthusiasts. No longer carrying only missiles, the Tomcat’s new form—with smart bombs mounted beneath its fuselage—embodied its nickname: the “Bombcat.”
In 2001, as the War in Afghanistan began, the F-14A played a vital role. Operating under extreme conditions where allied airfields were scarce, it excelled in long-range missions launched from aircraft carriers. Its unmatched range, variable-geometry wings for stable low-altitude flight, and large payload capacity made it ideal. During this conflict, the Tomcat successfully transitioned from “king of the skies” to “master of precision bombing,” brilliantly closing the final chapter of its legacy.
What makes this kit special is its faithful 1/72-scale recreation of a historically significant aircraft: the VF-154 “Black Knights” Tomcat, as it appeared shortly after returning from missions in Afghanistan in 2003. The squadron soon returned to the U.S. for transition to the F/A-18F, making their brief stop in Japan a powerful memory for aviation fans. This kit captures the romance of “the last F-14 to fly in Japan” and the awe of seeing it up close.
The model’s precision is also worth noting. The bomb rack mounted beneath the fuselage is a newly molded part created specifically for this kit, accurately capturing the look of the Tomcat in its “strike fighter” role. The paint scheme and markings are based on the actual aircraft as it appeared in 2003, making this a satisfying piece for both collectors and modelers alike.
