【AREA 88】A Masterpiece Manga Featuring Numerous Fascinating Fighter Jet Model Kits and the Human Drama of Pilots in the Sky—What’s the Story of AREA 88?

2025-06-11
“Area 88” by Kaoru Shintani transcends the confines of a typical war manga, drawing readers into the extreme world of the battlefield through a mercenary war chronicle. Serialized from 1979 to 1986, this work has continued to be supported by many fans due to its fusion of intricate mechanical depictions and human drama. The protagonist, Shin Kazama, was leading a smooth and successful life as a trainee pilot for a major airline. He was set to marry his beloved girlfriend, Ryoko Tsugumo, and his future seemed all but secured. However, behind the scenes, his close friend Satoru Kanzaki was plotting against him. Envious of Shin's success, Kanzaki tricked him into joining the mercenary unit “Area 88” in the Middle Eastern kingdom of Aslan. This marked the beginning of his harsh and bloodstained fate.
Area 88 in the kingdom of Aslan is truly the front line of hell. Fighter pilots risk their lives in combat and earn a living through bounty money awarded for shooting down enemy planes. To be discharged, one must either pay a massive penalty fee or survive until the end of their contract. No longer a mere soldier, Shin becomes a mercenary who stakes his life, and though he dreams of returning to Japan, he is gradually consumed by the madness of war and the allure of reward. Encounters and farewells with comrades, heartless decisions on the battlefield, and cruel fates that sometimes tear apart even friendship and love—all are depicted with a suffocating sense of realism.
The greatest charm of “Area 88” that still hasn’t faded lies in its overwhelming mechanical detail and the beauty of its character portrayals. Even niche fighter jets like the F-5E, F-20, and X-29 appear, endlessly fascinating readers. Not only are the fighter jets drawn with meticulous detail, but the pilots' complex and sensitive psychological portrayals also strike a chord. The many melancholic lines exchanged during life-risking aerial battles deeply immerse the reader in the world of the story.
Although the story uses war as its theme, it ultimately makes one realize it’s truly about the weakness and strength of the human heart. Beyond the thrill of dogfights, “Area 88” is a whirlwind of emotions—betrayal, jealousy, desire, loneliness, friendship, and love—making it a work well worth revisiting in the current era. Before you know it, you’ll be flying alongside Shin Kazama, projecting your own anguish and inner conflicts onto his.
