At first glance, the Renault R40 light tank may appear small and charming, but within its frame lies the French military’s trial-and-error spirit and resistance-era engineering. Based on the Renault R35 that debuted in the early stages of World War II, the R40 was an improved version developed to overcome the R35’s shortcomings. One of its most notable enhancements was the adoption of a new suspension system, which significantly improved both cross-country performance and ground clearance. This enabled far greater flexibility in supporting infantry—its primary role. Additionally, the extremely compact two-man crew design reflects the French tank design philosophy of efficiently packing function into limited space.

Another major upgrade in the R40 was its turret and main gun. The switch from a short-barreled gun to the long-barreled SA38 37mm cannon marked a significant leap in firepower. This gun was mounted on the cast APX-R1 turret, which visually added to the tank’s weighty presence. As an anti-tank weapon, it was a solid performer among French light tanks of the time.
