[Tank] Heavily Upgraded with Enhanced Firepower! The French Light Infantry Tank Renault R40 with 37mm SA38 Now in 1/72 Scale!
At first glance, the Renault R40 light tank may appear small and charming, but within its frame lies the French military’s trial-and-error spirit and resistance-era engineering. Based on the Renault R35 that debuted in the early stages of World War II, the R40 was an improved version developed to overcome the R35’s shortcomings. One of its most notable enhancements was the adoption of a new suspension system, which significantly improved both cross-country performance and ground clearance. This enabled far greater flexibility in supporting infantry—its primary role. Additionally, the extremely compact two-man crew design reflects the French tank design philosophy of efficiently packing function into limited space.
Another major upgrade in the R40 was its turret and main gun. The switch from a short-barreled gun to the long-barreled SA38 37mm cannon marked a significant leap in firepower. This gun was mounted on the cast APX-R1 turret, which visually added to the tank’s weighty presence. As an anti-tank weapon, it was a solid performer among French light tanks of the time. Of course, it doesn't compare to modern main battle tanks, but as a light tank improved for its era, the R40 showcases the designers’ ambition and ingenuity. With armor up to 58mm thick, it achieved a reasonable level of durability for a light tank, exemplifying a design that balanced mobility and protection.
This plastic model not only offers fine craftsmanship but also invites you to explore its historical context. Aiding in that exploration is a booklet included with the kit that details the Polish campaign. Although the text is in Polish, it features plenty of photographs, making it visually enjoyable even if you can’t read the language. As you build the model while flipping through the booklet, you’ll feel like you're reconstructing a moment in history, not just assembling plastic parts. Most notably, learning how the R40 was used in combat and later captured and repurposed by the German army adds even greater weight to the tank’s historical legacy.
